Overview: Section 7.53 of S.L. 2026‑41 (Senate Bill 257) allows public school units in Wake County and Johnston County to receive a waiver of the computer science graduation requirement for students entering the ninth grade in the 2026‑2027 school year by submitting a signed notification to the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) stating that no computer science course fulfilling the computer science graduation requirement is available to students.
Public school units that receive a waiver for the 2026‑2027 school year must submit a plan to DPI by January 1, 2027, specifying the approved computer science course that will be available to students to fulfill the graduation requirement beginning in the 2027‑2028 school year.
This section became effective July 7, 2026.
